Advent Season at Oak Park
This coming Sunday marks the first week of Advent at Oak Park. Advent is a special season we set aside with special traditions, special services, and new music.
During this season you'll see a change in our services as we start each worship service with a special reading, and lighting of the Advent wreath. The Advent candles are a tool which help us remember the significance of the season. They show the contrast of darkness with growing light, reminding us of the long dark ages of human history waiting for our savior, "the light of the world", to come. As each candle is lit the darkness is pushed away more and more as we welcome the savior and prepare our hearts.
This year in addition to our regular services Oak Park will host two special services; a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, and a Christmas Morning Carol Service.
On Christmas Eve at 5:30 Oak Park will host a candlelight service with carol singing and a reading of the Christmas story which will end with a community candle lighting. Children are encouraged to come in their pajamas for this short family friendly service.
Christmas Day we'll celebrate with a traditional Carol Service ringing in Christmas with the classic hymns of Christmas. This service will feature a special Children's Christmas Story time led by family minister Joshua Page. The service will start at the regular time with no discipleship classes.
Along with classic Christmas Carols we'll be introducing a new song in worship during this advent season in keeping with our sermon series. "He Who is Mighty" by Rebecca Elliot and Kate Degraide is beautiful new worship songs that draws from the promises of the prophets to tell the story of Christ. We hope it will help you connect the christmas story to its wonderful prelude in the story of redeption throughout the old testament.
