Five Questions About the New Discipleship Classes
Oak Park Family,
This past Sunday we shared with you about the launch of our new Discipleship Classes at Oak Park. Your pastors are extremely excited to see how God will use these classes to further grow us in the knowledge and love of Christ. With this in mind, you may still have some lingering questions. Below I seek to provide answers to the five most pressing questions concerning the new discipleship classes.
1. Why do we need new Discipleship Classes?
One of the strengths of our church is that we’re Bible-centered. This emphasis is not only reflected in the pulpit, but in all of our ministries. However, our pastors began to notice that, though we’re regularly teaching through various books of the Bible, there isn’t much of a diet for teaching on various topics and subjects related to the Bible. Furthermore, we noticed there weren’t any classes geared toward new believers or those interesting in following Christ.
In light of this imbalance, we’ve developed a new discipleship structure for Sunday mornings. These classes will run on a quarterly schedule in five tracks of study: Bible, Theology & History, Christian Disciplines, Marriage, Family, & Relationships, and Fundamentals. Therefore, each quarter there will be five different classes available for you to take.
2. Who is teaching these Discipleship Classes?
One of the benefits of this new structure is that we can utilize more of our members who have the gift of teaching, or have a particular expertise in a subject (i.e. Biblical Stewardship). Therefore, we won’t have teachers dedicated to one particular class, but rather each quarter we’ll have a new slate of classes and teachers. To find out who is teaching the upcoming quarter please visit www.oakparkbaptist.com/discipleship where you’ll find a list of the classes offered along with the teachers for those classes.
3. What if I’m interested in more than one class?
Another benefit of this new structure is that with five different tracks, we can repeat classes, and no one is stuck without a class for him or her to attend. For the first two years, we’ll offer the same slate of classes. The rational for this is two-fold: first, we’d like each member to take each of the main intro courses (i.e. Bible, Theology, Disciplines, and Marriage, Family & relationships). In order to get everyone through these classes we will have to repeat them for two full years. Second, if during a particular quarter there is more than one class you’d like to take, you don’t have to worry. That same class will be offered again later in the year.
4. When will the Discipleship Classes be offered?
Our Discipleship Classes will begin Sunday September 4th, and will take place during our usual Sunday School hour (9:15 AM – 10:15 AM).
5. How do I register for a Discipleship Class?
Registration will open four Sundays prior to the start of the quarter. To register for a Discipleship Class please visit www.oakparkbaptist.com/discipleship and follow these steps:
- Scroll to the section entitled “Register for a Class.”
- There you’ll see a link that says “Complete the registration form.” Click it.
- A new window will open in your browser, which contains the registration form. Once you've complete the form, press “Submit.”
- Upon the submission of this form, you will be registered for the class you selected.
Two Sundays before the your class begins, you’ll receive an email from your teachers with the location of your class, and any other important details. If for some reason you’d like to change the class you’ve registered for, please call the church office at 812-283-9400, and we can make that change for you.
