Elders’ Statement on Wesley Leon Feltner
November 7th, 2019
Recently, the Elders were informed of the allegations brought against former youth pastor, Wesley Leon Feltner. Feltner served on the pastoral staff approximately from 2003–2007. The circumstances around these allegations occurred prior to Feltner’s employment at Oak Park Baptist Church (OPBC). We are also unaware of any reports of abuse occurring while Feltner was on staff at OPBC.
Feltner’s tenure did not overlap with any of the current pastoral leadership or staff. Thus, we have no personal knowledge of the details surrounding the process of his hiring. If, however, anyone has knowledge of this situation as it pertains to OPBC, please do not hesitate to contact us.
In recent years, we have substantially bolstered our hiring process to help mitigate the possibility of employing anyone morally disqualified for the ministry. This process involves a close examination of a man’s life and doctrine, along with a thorough background check and consideration of his reputation outside the church (1 Tim 3:1–7; 4:16). Furthermore, if we were ever warned of one’s unfitness for a position, we would take all notifications seriously and examine them properly before proceeding with their hiring.
We’re grieved by these reports of pastoral abuse and encourage the members of OPBC to pray for all the parties involved. Please pray for the truth to prevail, justice to be served, and God’s redeeming grace to abound toward the two women mentioned in the reports, their families, the Feltner family, and all the churches named.
On behalf of the Elders,
Chase Sears, Lead Pastor
